San Francisco Trauma-Informed Yoga Training

  • Yoga Tree Training Center 175 De Haro Street San Francisco, CA, 94103 United States (map)

This 5-day training is designed to offer a physiological framework of shock and complex trauma and how they manifest in the body and mind. It includes a Foundations module and a Social Justice & Embodiment Module. We will give you tools from the growing field of trauma research, yoga, and mindfulness to manage and even resolve symptoms of trauma. Our goal is to equip yoga teachers to teach to students with trauma, and to offer tools to those working with those with trauma in other capacities.

Anxiety, depression, behavioral issues, relationship stress, and health issues are often the result of unresolved trauma. The goal of a trauma-informed yoga practice is to build resiliency and establish greater self-regulation. It is about feeling safe and at home in our bodies so that we can feel stable, have good self-esteem, and healthy relationships. A trauma-informed yoga practice is sensitive to the needs of a participant with trauma symptoms, and offers them tools to feel safe, empowered and self-regulated.

The Foundations Module provides an integrative framework for understanding how complex trauma and chronic stress impact the body and mind while also focusing on the ancient practices of yoga and somatic meditation and their ability to reduce Post Traumatic Stress symptoms and increase a greater sense of well-being. It equips students with relevant theory, tools, and in-person practice to better support trauma survivors as they befriend their bodies and reclaim a sense of safety and empowerment in their lives.

The Social Justice & Embodiment Module explores the intersection of trauma and social justice while focusing on inclusivity as an approach. It provides a somatic and socio-political framework of personal, interpersonal, and systemic trauma and how these patterns manifest in individuals, their communities, ourselves, and our teaching. It also investigates the link between personal trauma and institutionalized and normalized systems of oppression and marginalization, including issues at the forefront of social justice such as poverty, racism, ableism, sexism and homophobia.

This training is for yoga teachers who would like to work with individuals or communities with trauma. It is also for clinicians, social workers, medical personnel, or anyone else who would like to integrate basic yoga tools into their work to support greater health and well-being.
